About Our Project in Another Book
2008-03-13
There is a new interesting position on the Polish publishing market by the Nadbałtyckiego Centrum Kultury (Baltic Sea Cultural Center) about the Polish-Russian relations. In the book "Polacy Rosjanie: Wzajemne Relacje" ( Poles - Russians: Mutual Relations) among materials from a debate about the above mentioned relations, there is a review about the I edition of the “Russia -Poland. New Gaze” project. The author takes a critical look at (only) a part of the films realized as part of the project. Though he does appreciate the effort taken by the filmmakers since the films allowed him to realize the enormity of problems that have grown in the relations between Poles and Russians.

Special Mention for "The First Day" in Prague
2008-03-13
Marcin Sauter has received another award for his documentary "The First Day". At he just finished "One World" Documentary Film Festival in Prague the film has received the Mayor of Prague Special Mention Award. The festival took place between the 5-13 of March 2008.
The jury’s verdict to the sophisticated picture: To The First Day, directed by Marcin Sauter, we would like to give a special mention for showing a clear, creative and cinematic story in which, we think, every viewer will go back and remember their own first day of going to school. This Polish film presents a poetic coming-of-age story in a remote part of Russia. But in showing us one of life’s cruelest moments, Marcin also manages to tell the wider story of a Siberian tribe and the so-called advance of civilization.

About "Stone Silence" and the "Russia-Poland. New Gaze" project in "Gazeta Wyborcza".
2008-03-04
"Gazeta Wyborcza" (Polish daily) published an article entitled "Nie ma klimatu dla dokumentu"( There Is No Climate For a Documentary), which is an interview by Tadeusz Sobolewski with Artur Liebhart, a documentary distributor and the chief of the Planete Doc Review festival.
Liebhart notices that Polish documentary films lack themes going beyond Poland, even though Poles are in different ways present and engaged in many parts of the world ( wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the work of the Polish Humanitarian Organization, economic migration). As one of a few exceptions Liebhart mentions Krzysztof Kopczyński’s documentary "Stone Silence", and also the films realized under the "Russia-Poland. New Gaze" project (especially Wojciech Kasperski’s film "The Seeds").

Second of three programs of Short Films from an innovative experiment in international understanding:
RUSSIA IN THE EYES OF POLES, POLAND IN THE EYES OF RUSSIANS
Following the warm reception of Part One by a full-house international audience on September 30, the second is a three-part series of films will be shown at Galapagos Art Space on Sunday, October 28, at 8 p.m. In a innovative program of cross-cultural encouner called Russia-Poland. New Gaze, selected film students from a number of film schools in Russia “traded places” with their counterparts from film schools in Poland to make short documentary films about each other’s countrymen. As a group the films offer intriguing personal glimpses – a “new gaze” – into the lives of “others”, with the similarities at least as startling as the contrasts. The enthusiastic young film-school students used their talents and skills to explore who those "Poles" and "Russians" really are. These films thus came to life through the confrontation of prejudices with spontaneous interactions, and the collision of expectations with facts, bringing us closer to the truth about the stereotypes dividing these two nations.
The films have been shown over 300 times throughout Europe and cumulatively have garnered nearly thirty awards. (Part Three will be shown on Sunday, November 18, at 8 p.m.)
Russia-Poland. New Gaze was co-produced by Eureka Media and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, with further financial support from the Polish Film Institute and in collaboration with the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing, Gerasimov All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography, St. Petersburg State University of Cinema and Television, K. "Stone Silence" Awarded
2007-11-05
The documentary film "Stone Silence" about a 25-year old woman suspected and murdered for adultery in Afghanistan on April 2005, has received the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 50th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film - DOK Leipzig on the 3rd of November 2007.
In its judgment the jury stated:
"Has Amina, a married woman, been stoned for adultery in an Afghan village? The fascinating pictures of the movie are taking the viewer through a labyrinth of truths and lies, of unspoken words and contradictions, where the village community tries to evade the pressure exerted by the law, religion, tradition and human feelings. In an exciting search for the truth, the film manages to go far beyond the local context and, in a provocative way, puts the old biblical words to the test: “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."
"Stone Silence" is Krzysztof Kopczyński’s debut as a director. The cinematographers of the film are Jacek Petrycki and Hanna Polak, the sound was done by Jarosław Roszyk and Jafar Panahi, edited by Anna Dymek, the music was written by Krzysztof Knittel, recorded by Marcin Kijo, the production was managed by Dorota Rozowska. The film was co-produced by Eureka Media, TVP S.A. and Society Films, supported by The Polish Script Agency and the Polish Film Institute.
The documentary which has recently received the "Sky is the Limit" Production Award at the Chicago International Documentary Festival in April 2007 as “Work in progress”, will in the nearest feature be presented at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam in the "Reflecting Images - Best of Fests" category and at the 7th WATCH DOCS. About the film:
A 25-year old woman suspected of adultery was killed in the village of Spingul in the high mountains of northern Afghanistan. Information, which spread all over the world on April 23rd, 2005, has become the incipience of this story. The documentary presents the history of two lovers in the eyes of witnesses, reconstructing the tragic occurrence. The author of the film tries to answer what happened on the day of Amina’s death. Amina was killed in circumstances that have been described in varying versions. The investigation defends a thesis that the main cause of the death was heart attack. The main characters of the movie present totally different approaches to the event. The film shows how difficult it is for outsiders to understand the Muslim hierarchy of values. A world, in which nothing is worth less than man’s life.
The Film "Stone Silence" received the Production Award "Sky is the Limit" at the Chicago International Documentary Festival on April 2007 as “Work in progress”. The Polish premiere is planned for December 2007.
